The President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal (“CAT”) is consulting on potential changes to the working practices of the CAT in relation to the approach adopted in relation to the selection of Chairs and Ordinary Members. The aim is to inform the future recruitment of members or deployment of judges to the CAT.

Advocate, in collaboration with the Competition Appeal Tribunal, is setting up a pro bono scheme to provide assistance and representation for eligible litigants in person in connection with cases or prospective cases in the Competition Appeal Tribunal.

Practising Barristers who would, in principle, be willing to undertake pro bono work in the Competition Appeal Tribunal, are asked to add their names to a mailing list of Volunteer Advocates to be contacted by Advocate when cases arise.

The Lord Chancellor has appointed The Honourable Mrs Justice Bacon to be President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal with effect from 23 May 2025.

Mrs Justice Bacon replaces The Honourable Mr Justice Roth whose appointment as Acting President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal will end on 22 May 2025. Mr Justice Roth will continue to sit as a Chairman of the Tribunal.

A Judicial Appointments Commission competition to appoint a new CAT President will be announced shortly. The Lord Chancellor has appointed Sir Peter Roth as acting CAT President until a new President is appointed.

The Lord Chancellor has appointed The Honourable Mr Justice Marcus Smith to be President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal with effect from 5 November 2021.

Sir Marcus Smith replaces The Honourable Mr Justice Roth whose appointment as President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal ended on 4 November 2021. Mr Justice Roth will return to the  High Court (Chancery Division) and will continue to sit as a Chairman of the Tribunal.

The President and his colleagues are greatly saddened to report that Marion Simmons, one of the first chairmen of the Tribunal died on 2 May 2008. She had been undergoing treatment for cancer.

The President has put in place arrangements to ensure the smooth running of each of the matters before the Tribunal where Miss Simmons was chairing the panel. In due course, each of these panels will be reconstituted and further announcements will be placed on this web site.
